A lot of people from the village and others from elsewhere in Eden were interested to find out more about our High Speed Broadband when NextGenUs offered an open invitation to attend a demonstration of the newly active network. As you may of heard, our fibre link into Cumbria has been lit and we are now beginning to connect customers to our network. The demonstration was held in the Highland Drove pub in Great Salkeld on Saturday 26th November giving everybody a chance to test speeds, ask questions and find out our roll out plans to other villages. A light buffet was provided.
A skimming device was discovered on the Lazonby Coop ATM cash machine on 8th October 2011. Had you used it recently? Contact your bank if you have any concerns News and Star report here

Friends of St Cuthbert’s Church Cheese and Wine Evening
An evening cheese and wine reception at Nunwick Hall on September 10th raised funds for and highlighted the objectives of the Friends of St. Cuthbert’s Church. We enjoyed excellent wine, a superb buffet of cheeses and nibbles and a sociable party atmosphere. New members of the Friends are welcomed. You can help their work by playing a part in ensuring that St Cuthbert’s stays at the heart of village life as it has done for 800 years. Musical, social and other events will continue to be held. Keep an eye on noticeboards, the village website etc for news. To join the Friends contact Philip Cranston (01768 898674) or Derek Patmore (01768 897074 )
Village Sports Day (July 2011)
Despite black leaden clouds looming all around, the rain just managed to stay away to help make this years Salkeld Sports Day one to remember. With a fancy dress competition themed on the 1960’s to help “celebrate” five villagers’ 50th Birthdays, the floats were decorated to dazzle and impress as were many individuals who dressed up as hippies & rock chicks; there was even a spaceman who made a “giant leap” onto the sports field! All the usual races were held and trophies awarded. There is a longer report and pictures in CRAIC 3 Magazine.
Village Duck Race – 5th June
It was great weather for ducks! The annual St Cuthbert’s Church Duck Race held on the Eden at Nunwick saw a flotilla of ducks tipped into the water and the spectators walking along the river bank to enjoy the race to the finish. Volunteers with nets waded out into the river to capture the ducks and soon the winners were announced while cream scones and refreshments were served on the verandah at Nunwick. Nobody seemed to mind the light rain. During the refreshments the Friends of Great Salkeld Village Field Squares Competition were announced.

The campaign for high speed broadband in Great Salkeld (March 2011)
A good number of people from the village, as well as interested representatives from other local communities attended the open meeting (Village Hall, Great Salkeld, Thursday 3rd March 2011, 7:30 p.m) to hear how Next Generation Access Broadband (NGA) can be delivered to the residents of Great Salkeld and the surrounding area.
A page will be created on this website to with updates on the meeting, issues raised, facts and figures. You’ll be able to comment through the page too.
A lot of people came to the meeting. Craig Brass from NextGenUs gave presentation on our options for getting NGA.

The next step would be to consider it further and for the whole community to think about the options.
We could see the arrival of internet connection that is as good as that in the major cities. It can’t happen without community support as it won’t be provided by BT in the foreseeable future.
What is NGA broadband?
Whilst ADSL broadband is currently delivered over copper telephone lines, Next Generation Access deploys the broadband connection to a property via fibre optic cable. This allows internet speeds way in excess of what is available in most urban areas to be achieved.
Why is it important to have NGA broadband?
The current method of delivering Broadband over copper lines has reached the limit of its capability which is why BT have embarked on a program to upgrade some of their exchanges to allow faster broadband speeds over fibre. BT have stated that the Lazonby exchange will NOT be upgraded with fibre capability now or in the foreseeable future which means that the broadband speed being received via the Lazonby exchange cannot be increased. Going forward this will have serious implications as the demands of the internet require more and more bandwidth that will just not be available.
Won’t NGA broadband suffer the same problem as ADSL?
No. NGA is ‘future-proof’. This means that once the fibre has been laid it will never need to be replaced. If more capacity is required in future the upgrade is done from above ground equipment. That said 100Mb will meet most people’s requirements for quite a while.
How will NGA broadband benefit me?
The way we use the internet is changing as more and more services are going on line. The BBC are putting out more and more iPlayer content in High Definition. Already on the horizon is YouView which is set to revolutionise how we watch TV via the internet (http://www.youview.com). The vast majority of ADSL connections just aren’t fast enough to receive such content.
How fast is NGA broadband?
If you have a Fibre to the Home (FttH) connection installed your speed will be 100Mb. If it isn’t possible to lay fibre to a premises the last leg of the connection would be wireless which would still deliver an impressive 50Mb. So, compared to the fastest ADSL speed possible NGA broadband would still be at least 6 times faster. For most people with FttH their NGA broadband speed will be around 20-30 times faster than their current speed.
Who is behind the campaign for faster broadband?
This initiative has the full backing of Great Salkeld Parish Council but it is reliant on strong community support. It can only happen if there is a will to do it so if this is something you would like to see in your parish it’s vital that you register your interest.
What if I couldn’t attend the meeting?
